December 8th in Rome
The covid has changed our lives and also the traditions of Rome and those who visit the eternal city.
Among these, one of the most popular was the visit that the Pope makes every year on December 8 on the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
Many, from all over the world, attended the symbolic delivery of flowers in Piazza Mignanelli, a few steps from the Spanish Steps, to the column of the Immaculate Conception.
An evocative celebration that has seen the firemen involved since 1923, who with one of their cranes reached 27 meters to the top of the column on which there is the bronze statue depicting Our Lady to deposit the crown given to them by the Pope composed of white and yellow flowers that represent the papal colors.
Unfortunately, since 2020 it has no longer been possible to make this traditional delivery.
Although Pope Bergoglio did visit the church last year to bring the wreath, he did so in secret, making a surprise visit at dawn and in the pouring rain at the foot of the column of the Immaculate Conception.
Here he made his private greeting by laying a bouquet of flowers under the statue and respecting in a certain way this tradition.
Also this year there will be no delivery … but who knows if at dawn there will be “Someone” even in this December 8, 2021 with flowers for the “Madonnina” who watches over the Spanish Steps and the whole city!
