Christmas Tree In St. Peter Square 2021
In Rome, the tradition of the Christmas tree in St. Peter’s Square began in 1982
with Pope John Paul II,
who had received as a gift a very large fir tree from a farmer who had brought it from Poland to Rome.
Pope Wojtila had no choice but to put it in the square, thus starting this custom.
The Christmas tree that you will find in St. Peter’s Square this year comes from the woods of Andalo, in the Paganella Dolomites in Trentino Alto Adige.
It is 28 meters tall and a 113 year old specimen with a total weight of 80 quintals.
Next to the tree, as you can see in the picture, is the beautiful crib that this year comes from the Andes, from the village of Chopcca, a community in the department of Huancavelica in Peru.
