Christmas Tree in Venice Square
A different story surrounds the tree in Piazza Venezia.
For all Romans its name is
“Spelacchio” a new term, coined by the Romans, that now identifies a bare tree, poverty of foliage (spelacchiato).
Spelacchio 2017
This particular nickname was given in 2017 when the tree, which came from Val di Fiemme, loses much of the green of its branches, presenting itself at the appointment of Christmas in a somewhat sad version with few branches.
As you can see.
This led to deserve the irony of the Romans and everyone began to call him Spelacchio , actually turning that sad tree in a celebrity, making it the protagonist of thousands of selfies.
This year’s tree that you can find in Piazza Venezia comes from the province of Como and is 25 meters high, three meters lower than the one in San Pietro.
It is illuminated by 100 thousand LED lights, mostly red interspersed with single white, blue and green lights.
The Christmas balls are about 800, with diameters of 25 and 30 centimeters and are of 8 different colors.
One particular novelty there was this year.
For the first, 17 giant parcels were placed at the base of the tree, symbolizing the sustainable development goals that the UN intends to pursue.
An action that also symbolizes Rome’s desire to act in a way that safeguards the planet and people.
