December 25 – “Soli Invicti”
December 25 is remembered as the day of the nativity of many divinities and this is due to the many populations linked to this date.
But why this date?
On December 25 the Romans celebrated the “Dies Natalis Soli Invicti” that is the Day of the birth of the Invincible Sun.
It was a pagan holiday, of the followers of the God Mithras, who celebrated December 25 as the date of the rebirth of the sun.
It is interesting that this date has been chosen by populations even distant from each other, both in places and in years (Egyptians, Persians, Babylonians, and even the Incas).
This is because anyway the date is linked to the winter solstice, and then to that particular moment when the sun stops decreasing and begins to gain minutes, day by day.
And the presence of the sun, linked to its impact on nature, was at the basis of the living of all humanity, intimately linked to the rhythms dictated by the presence of the sun and other atmospheric events.
So it was easy, in the 4th century for Julius I, to identify December 25 as the day of Jesus’ birth, a date later made official in 529 by Justinian.
